It’s Monday, June 20, 2022. This Beautiful Day bestowed upon us in Los Angeles feels perfect for the beach. By noon, the temperature had already reached 100°F; it was an ideal opportunity to connect with nature. For the last few weeks, the urge to be near the ocean was getting stronger with each passing day.
The freeway traffic seems heavier than usual for a Monday. I reached Malibu Beach by early afternoon and was pleasantly surprised to see so many people out enjoying the beach.
Pacific Coast traffic is comparable to a weekend… full of people and hard to find a parking space. The weather was now perfect at 77°F as I drove down to Venice Beach, where I arrived at 3:00 PM. I asked the parking attendant, “Is it a holiday today?” Maria, the lovely attendant, answered with a heavy accent, "Yes I don't know the name, I think black people holiday." I smiled and said, “Thank you”. As I walked to the beach, I asked Siri the same question. Siri answered, "It's World Refugee Day. Also, it is Orthodox All Saints' Day."
As I’m writing this, I’m incredibly grateful that I was unaware of these holidays because the thought of Monday and holiday LA traffic would have been overwhelming and deterred me from the experiences of this beautiful day.
I’m taken back by the vastness of the sandy coast at Venice Beach; it is truly amazing. It's the largest I have seen so far. It’s been a while since I have been back. I try to avoid using public restrooms here, but I had to; I was hoping to see an improvement, but nothing has changed. Here’s a tip: bring your own toilet paper, don’t take deep breath, touch only if and what you must as well as to remember to wash and sanitize your hands.
LAPD surveillance helicopters pass by about every hour… it does feel safe.
Time has passed and it is now 6:00 PM. The sun is gentler on my skin, the color of the sky is getting warmer, people are still enjoying the water and I am down to one water bottle.
It is now 7:00 PM, the air is getting cooler and people are starting to leave as I wait for the sunset.
8:00 PM and the sun has set, the Coast Guards are closing up and it is time to go home.
